Feldenkrais Method® is a mind-body approach which combines movement, touch and directed attention to help you move and live more comfortably and effectively. Lessons help you to become aware of habitual neuromuscular patterns so that you can learn to move in new ways, increasing range of motion and improving flexibility and coordination. Feldenkrais lessons are offered in 2 ways:
- ATM Awareness Through Movement (ATM) are lessons in which the teacher verbally instructs students in a sequence of movements. ***see note below
- Functional Integration® (FI) are one to one hands on sessions in which the teacher gently guides the student with light touch and words.
Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons are structured movement classes that are verbally directed and give you a framework for exploring how to move with greater ease, efficiency and pleasure. A lesson might focus on a specific area of the body; be structured around a simple function like reaching or turning; a developmental movement from childhood; or focus on important connections through the body. Since the goal is learning, you move comfortably and gently, so your attention can be on HOW you move, not on how far, how much or how fast. You cultivate curiosity and playfulness, and experiment with options: how can you do this movement so that it is more enjoyable, easier, more satisfying? ***Most Feldenkrais lessons are done lying on the floor, on back, side or stomach. Functional Integration (FI) lessons are one to one, hands-on sessions of the Feldenkrais Method. Each session is individualized to your specific needs, whether regaining mobility, reducing pain, overcoming limitations or generally improving performance. Together we look at how you are moving, and uncover unconscious habits – ways you always move, as well as places you no longer do, the forgotten territory. You rest comfortably on a table as I guide your body in ways that increase self-awareness; introduce new movement options; awaken places that have forgotten how to move; explore patterns and establish connections through the body; and make chronic tensions unnecessary. Sumati Eberstadt is a Guild-Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner CM with over 25 years of experience. She offers the only weekly Awareness Through Movement group Feldenkrais lessons in Rhode Island, as well as individual Functional Integration® (FI) at Motion Center. She is a Guild-Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner CM and member of the Feldenkrais Guild of North America. She began her career in movement as a modern dancer, choreographer and teacher in Providence RI. She had her first intensive experience of the Feldenkrais Method® with Gaby Yaron in Munich, 1984, and went on to train in Switzerland (1986-1989) with Mia Segal, first assistant to Moshe Feldenkrais, and his close colleague and collaborator for 25 years. Sumati has taught Feldenkrais® to groups and individuals in India, Germany, Holland and Austria. She has lead specialized workshops and lessons for physical therapists, massage therapists, dancers, musicians and meditators. She has assisted in several of Ms. Segal’s later trainings, and has continued to seek out and experience a variety of teachers in advanced trainings, including Larry Goldfarb, Jerry Karzen and Carl Ginsberg. In Rhode Island she has taught Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) classes at the Brown Learning Community, at the Loft Dance and Movement Studio, and the JCC. She currently gives weekly classes and individual lessons Functional Integration® (FI) at Motion Center Yoga in Pawtucket, RI. She has been involved with holistic therapy and meditation for over 35 years.
Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner requires years of extensive training. A Feldenkrais Accredited Training is an internationally accredited immersive program of 800+ hours of experiential and pedagogical learning, organized over the course of 4 years. Upon completing the program, the Feldenkrais Guild® of North America is ready to present graduates of an Accredited Training with an opportunity to be certified as a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner cm.
