Sunday, Nov 10, 12-3pm
Cost $45. Preregistration Required.

Sri BKS Iyengar taught yoga as an embodied practice through which we can use the body as an instrument to purify the consciousness and to realize the Self. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra is essential to understanding Guruji’s “philosophy of asana,”. In this workshop, we will explore some of the Yoga Sutra's central concepts to better understand important principles of yoga philosophy and highlight the ways that BKS Iyengar connects the Yoga Sutras to our embodied experience.

Jarvis Chen has been a practitioner of Iyengar Yoga for over twenty years and is certified at the Senior Intermediate level. His primary teacher is Patricia Walden, whom he assists regularly in classes and workshop. He travels regularly to Pune to study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute.

Students are encouraged to bring a copy of BKS Iyengar’s Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and/or other translations/commentaries. We will have extra copies at the studio. Though the format will primarily be lecture and discussion, please come dressed to do asana so that we can explore how Patanjali’s yoga can inform our asana practice. Session will include a break.

Pre-registration required for the entire 6 week series. Space is limited
Suggested donation: $15 per class/$90 for series

To register contact Shana.L.Klinger@gmail.com or call 401-258-3056

The Relaxed Mind is a book describing a seven step method for deepening meditation practice as taught by Tibetan Buddhist master Dza Kilung Rinpoche. The first four of the seven meditations create a solid foundation for ongoing meditation practice and for connecting to calmness, relaxation, inspiration, and spaciousness of body and mind.

The meditations are:

1. Basic Sitting – Joining Body and Mind: Experiencing our physical body as the support and foundation for meditation, we gently join our body with mental awareness.

2. Calm Abiding: Using an object of attention to free ourselves from the disturbances of thoughts and to reach a state of calm and stability (shamatha).

3. Refined Basic Sitting: Calm evolves into clarity, relaxation, energy, and inspiration, providing a bridge to the experience of insight.

4. Insight Meditation: Seeing beneath the surface to the nature of all phenomena, with clarity and insight we understand things as they really are (vipassana).

Each 90 minute class in this 6 week series offers instruction and explanation of the meditation technique, time to practice the meditation together, and opportunity for questions and answers. It is helpful, but not necessary, to read The Relaxed Mind during the class.

Instructor: Shana Lieberman Klinger has been meditating since 1974 and is authorized by Dza Kilung Rinpoche to give instruction in the seven meditations in The Relaxed Mind. To learn more about Shana visit http://www.heartmindspace.com/

Aspiration Into Action Workshop for the New Year

Saturday, January 5 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM

A NEW YEAR’S WORKSHOP to energize your life, meditation or yoga practice and connect your heart, mind and action.

Looking for inspiration to stick with your meditation or yoga practice?  Want to start the new year off with clearer and deeper motivation and meaning?  Forget about resolutions!  Spiritual traditions teach us that heartfelt ASPIRATIONS are the key to energizing meaningful lives and regular practice.  That's because they originate from the deepest level of both heart and mind.  Drawing on the Buddhist understanding of altruistic aspiration and motivation, together with techniques of psychology and ritual, this workshop offers simple techniques to make and keep aspirations.

Each participant will learn to:

1) Create a personalized aspiration from the heart for 2019.

2) Identify and let go of that which may obstruct your aspiration.

3) Identify and energize that which will enact your aspiration.

4) Develop a brief routine (under 2 minutes) to connect with and put into practice your aspiration in terms of specific activities and relationships.

Workshop includes a group meditation of loving kindness and compassion for ourselves and our world.

Intro to Buddhist Meditation Techniques and Insights
Alternate Sundays in November and December - 3:30 to 5:00 PM
November 4, 18, December 2, 16
with Shana Lieberman Klinger, M.A. Psychology
Cost: $60- $100/for all 4 sessions(*scholarships available  Pre-registration required. To register for the series: contact shana.l.klinger@gmail.com or 401-258-3056

The Buddha was driven to understand why there was suffering, why things aren’t the way we want them to be, and how to live with the reality of dissatisfaction in a way that allowed true freedom, happiness, and benefit to others.  His insights were based on doing meditation practices that are still totally relevant today.  Like him, we are confronted in our daily lives with different kinds of suffering, both inner and outer, and big questions about how to lead meaningful and happy lives. Read More.

This four session series will explain basic Buddhist
principles and insights as they apply to our 21stcentury lives, as well as introduce four categories of meditation techniques:

  • calm (concentration);

  • kind (compassion, loving kindness and altruistic motivation);

  • clear (mindfulness)

  • and wise (living by choice and in alignment with one’s ethics and deepest understanding).

Session 1 - Sunday, November 4:  Why can’t things be perfect?

We will hear the story of the Buddha’s collision with unsatisfactoriness, his journey to become free through meditation, and his most fundamental teaching and insights, called the first and second of The Four Noble Truths.

    • Introduction to meditative technique of “calm” – concentration (shamatha)

Session 2 -  Sunday, November 18:  Seeing things clearly, just as they are

The Buddha practiced meditation so deeply that it allowed him to understand the very nature of reality, to see it clearly, and through so doing, to become free from what bound him to suffering.  The third of The Four Noble Truths describes this possibility of the cessation of suffering.

    • Introduction to meditative technique of “clear” – mindfulness (vipassana)

Session 3 -  Sunday, December 2:  What’s love got to do with it?

The noble heart – the intention for ourselves and all beings to be happy and free from suffering - is regarded in Buddhism as the pinnacle of true love.  Sometimes called the Bodhisattva Path, this aspect of Buddhist practice harnesses the power of altruistic motivation combined with deep understanding about the sources of suffering.  Together with loving kindness and compassion practices, these provide great inspiration for both mundane and spiritual life.

    • Introduction to meditative technique of “kind” – compassion, loving kindness, altruistic motivation

Session 4 -  Sunday, December 16:  A blueprint for living wisely

The Buddha’s blueprint for living wisely is laid out in the Eightfold Noble Path, as described in The Fourth Noble Truth.  We will learn about its eight elements: three have to do with ethics, three with meditation, and two with our attitudes and understanding.

    • Introduction to meditative quality of “wise” – living in alignment with ethics and our deepest understanding.
